Henry Hub is the US wholesale benchmark, quoted in $/MMBtu. It is the commodity cost only — everything else on a bill is transport, distribution and fixed charges, which is why a collapse in the hub price barely dents a household bill. Track it on natural gas prices.
A therm is 100,000 Btu of energy. A CCF is one hundred cubic feet of gas and an Mcf is one thousand cubic feet — both are volumes, not energy. Because natural gas carries roughly 1.036 MMBtu per Mcf, 1 Mcf is about 10.36 therms and 1 CCF is about 1.036 therms. Utilities differ on which unit they bill in, which is why the same house can appear to use "80" one month and "8" the next depending on the statement.
Because they are different products. Henry Hub is the wholesale price of gas at a pipeline junction in Louisiana. Your bill also pays for interstate pipeline capacity, the local utility's distribution network, meters, storage, customer service and the utility's regulated return. Those delivery costs are largely fixed and do not fall when the commodity does — which is why the retail rate is typically four to six times the hub price and moves far less than the headline number.
Most utilities bill a flat monthly charge — commonly $10 to $25 — before any gas is used, covering the meter and the connection. It is why a bill is never zero in summer, and why a household that cuts consumption in half does not see the bill halve.
A US home heating with gas uses roughly 50 to 100 therms in a cold winter month and 10 to 20 therms in summer, when gas serves only the water heater, cooker and dryer.
