What is Brent Crude?
Brent crude is the international benchmark for light, sweet crude oil, drawn from North Sea fields and traded as the ICE BZ futures contract. It prices roughly two-thirds of the world's internationally traded crude and is the reference for markets across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Why is Brent the international oil benchmark?
Brent is seaborne crude that can be shipped anywhere, so its price reflects global supply and demand rather than one region's pipeline economics. Roughly two-thirds of internationally traded crude is priced off Brent, including most Middle Eastern, African and European grades.
Why does Brent usually cost more than WTI?
Brent loads directly onto tankers for export while WTI must travel by pipeline from Cushing, Oklahoma to the Gulf Coast before it can reach world markets. That transport cost, plus differences in regional supply-demand balances, keeps Brent at a premium most of the time.
