What is Natural Gas?
US natural gas is priced at the Henry Hub in Louisiana and traded as the NYMEX NG futures contract, quoted in dollars per million British thermal units (MMBtu). Prices are highly seasonal — driven by heating demand in winter, cooling/power demand in summer, storage levels and LNG export volumes.
Why are natural gas prices so seasonal?
Heating demand spikes in winter and power-generation (air-conditioning) demand rises in summer, while storage is injected in the shoulder seasons. The weekly EIA storage report — how full US storage is versus the 5-year average — is the single most-watched driver of the Henry Hub price.
What is Henry Hub?
Henry Hub is a natural-gas pipeline interchange in Erath, Louisiana where multiple interstate pipelines meet. Because so much physical gas changes hands there, it serves as the delivery point for NYMEX gas futures and the reference price for most North American gas contracts.
