What is RBOB Gasoline?
RBOB (Reformulated Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending) is the wholesale gasoline futures contract traded on NYMEX, quoted in dollars per gallon for New York Harbor delivery. Retail pump prices track RBOB plus ethanol blending, taxes, distribution and station margin — RBOB moves typically reach the pump within one to two weeks.
How does the RBOB price relate to what I pay at the pump?
Retail gasoline ≈ RBOB + ethanol blending + federal and state taxes + distribution and marketing. When RBOB rises 25¢, the pump usually follows within a week or two. The reverse pass-through on the way down is slower ("rockets and feathers").
Why does RBOB switch between summer and winter prices?
Summer-spec gasoline (required roughly May–September) has a lower vapor pressure to limit smog and is more expensive to make. The seasonal spec change each spring typically lifts RBOB by 10–20¢ before driving season even starts.
