US Oil & Gas Basins
Twelve producing regions that make up most of US oil and gas output, with each one's EIA production, active rigs and the companies producing there. Click a basin for its own page with key figures, operators, breakevens and FAQ. The Permian alone makes about 6.5 million barrels a day and has 274 of the 603 active US rigs.

Oil and gas output are EIA Drilling Productivity Report region totals for 2025 (2026-09-05 file), which include conventional wells inside each region. * Appalachia's figure covers the Marcellus and Utica together. † Federal offshore Gulf crude, EIA monthly, July 2026. ‡ Alaska statewide crude, EIA monthly. A dash means this site holds no separate figure. Rigs are Baker Hughes counts for the named basin(s); SCOOP/STACK, Powder River, the Gulf and Alaska are not broken out separately. Companies are those with a material producing position (operated or not), from the oil company directory.

US Basins FAQ
What is the biggest US oil basin?
The Permian Basin of West Texas and southeast New Mexico, at about 6.5 million barrels a day (2025, EIA DPR) and 274 of the 603 active US rigs (Baker Hughes, week of Oct 9). Appalachia (Marcellus and Utica together) is the largest gas region at about 35.5 Bcf/d.
What is the difference between a basin and a play?
A basin is a large geological depression that holds sedimentary rock and hydrocarbons; a play is a specific formation or target within it that operators drill. The Permian Basin contains the Wolfcamp and Spraberry plays; the Anadarko Basin contains SCOOP and STACK.
Which US basins are gas and which are oil?
The Permian, Bakken, Eagle Ford, DJ/Niobrara and the offshore Gulf are oil-led. The Marcellus, Utica and Haynesville are gas-led. The Anadarko Basin, including SCOOP and STACK, produces oil, gas and natural gas liquids together, and the Permian also produces a great deal of associated gas.
Where do the output and rig figures come from?
Output is from the EIA Drilling Productivity Report regions (hand-curated, annual) and, for the offshore Gulf, the EIA monthly state production series. Rigs are the weekly Baker Hughes North America rig count. Operators come from this site's company directory, which is hand-curated from company filings.
