Marcellus Shale Oil & Gas Production
The Marcellus is a Devonian-age gas shale under most of Pennsylvania and West Virginia and parts of eastern Ohio and southern New York. Its opening around 2004 turned Appalachia from a mature region into the largest natural gas supplier in the United States, and it remains the biggest gas field in the country.
Key Figures
| Measure | Value | As of / source |
|---|---|---|
| Active rigs (Marcellus) | 23 (unchanged wk) | 2026-10-09 · Baker Hughes · 4% of US rigs |
| States | Pennsylvania, West Virginia, eastern Ohio and southern New York (New York bans high-volume fracking) | EIA; state regulators |
| Marcellus and Utica together | 35.5 Bcf/d of natural gas (EIA Appalachia region, which combines the two shales) | 2025 · EIA DPR |
| Character | Mostly dry gas, especially in northeastern Pennsylvania, with wet-gas areas rich in ethane and other liquids in the southwest of the play | EIA |
| Regulators | Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, West Virginia DEP, Ohio Department of Natural Resources |

What Drives the Marcellus
Pipelines and prices
- The play sits close to Northeast and Mid-Atlantic demand but far from the Gulf Coast LNG terminals, so pipeline capacity decides the local price. When takeaway is tight, Appalachian gas trades at a discount to Henry Hub.
- The Mountain Valley Pipeline, in service since mid-2024, added a route south to Virginia and the Southeast.
- Live Henry Hub price and the storage balance are on natural gas and gas storage.
Who produces it
- Production is concentrated in a handful of gas-weighted independents; the operator table below lists the companies in this site's directory with material Marcellus positions.
- Output follows rig activity only loosely: producers here often hold back or add volumes in response to the gas price and pipeline space, which the rig map and market pulse show weekly.
- Pennsylvania, the largest producing state, is covered on Pennsylvania gas production.

Marcellus Shale FAQ
How many rigs are drilling in the Marcellus Shale?
Baker Hughes counted 23 active rigs in Marcellus Shale (Marcellus) in the week of Oct 9, unchanged week on week and 4% of the 603 active US rigs.
Who are the biggest operators in the Marcellus Shale?
Companies in this site's directory with material producing positions in the Marcellus Shale include Antero Resources, CNX Resources, Devon Energy, EQT, Expand Energy, Range Resources (some hold non-operated interests). Ownership and the other basins each one works are in the producer table above and in the oil company directory.
What is the difference between the Marcellus and the Utica?
Both are Appalachian shales, but the Utica (and its Point Pleasant interval) lies deeper, beneath the Marcellus. The Marcellus is the larger and more established gas play, concentrated in Pennsylvania and West Virginia; the Utica is developed mainly in eastern Ohio, where parts of it are rich in natural gas liquids. EIA reports them together as the Appalachia region.
Is the Marcellus Shale the largest gas field in the United States?
Yes, it is generally ranked as the largest natural gas-producing formation in the country. Appalachia, which combines the Marcellus and Utica, is the largest US gas-producing region.
