Oil & Gas Rig Map: US, Canada and OPEC

603 rigs were drilling in the US and 222 in Canada in the week to October 9, 2026, spread across 164 counties and regions. The Permian Basin alone ran 274 — 45% of the US fleet. The busiest US county was Eddy County, NM with 46; in Canada, the Foothills Front region ran 66. Across OPEC, Baker Hughes counted 424 rigs in August 2026, led by Saudi Arabia (274).

One bubble per US county, Gulf of Mexico offshore area or Canadian reporting region, sized by the number of active rotary rigs Baker Hughes counted there in the week to October 9, 2026. Bubbles sit at the county's geographic centre (US Census Gazetteer), not at the rigs' actual well sites — Baker Hughes does not publish rig coordinates. Canadian regions, offshore areas and Alaska quadrangles are drawn at approximate centres (dashed outline). Use the view buttons to zoom into crowded basins; hover or tap a bubble for the oil/gas split and the weekly change.

Baker Hughes counted 1,102 rigs outside the US and Canada in August 2026: Middle East 503, Asia-Pacific 201, Latin America 141, Europe 139, Africa 118. Russia and onshore China are not part of the survey, so this is not a complete world count.

How This Map Is Built

  • Source. Baker Hughes' North America Rotary Rig Count workbook, published every Friday, lists each active rig's county (or Canadian region), basin, oil/gas target and land/offshore location. The Worldwide Rig Count workbook gives monthly counts by country.
  • Resolution. County level for the US and region level for Canada — the finest detail Baker Hughes releases for free. Exact rig coordinates exist only in commercial rig-tracking databases, so this map does not pretend to show individual rigs.
  • Positions. US bubbles sit at the county's internal point from the US Census Bureau Gazetteer. Canadian regions, Gulf of Mexico offshore areas and Alaska quadrangles are not counties, so they are drawn at approximate centres and marked with a dashed outline.
  • Cadence. North America is weekly (this map: week to October 9, 2026); international counts are monthly (August 2026) and arrive a few days after month-end. Both are refreshed by hand after each release, so the dates above are the ones to trust.
  • Gaps are shown as gaps. Iran, Russia and onshore China aren't covered by Baker Hughes; they appear as "not reported", never as zero.

Rig Map FAQ

Where are most of the oil rigs in the US?

In the Permian Basin of West Texas and southeast New Mexico, which had 274 of the 603 active US rigs (45%) in the week to October 9, 2026. Texas as a whole ran 281 rigs and New Mexico 99. The single busiest county was Eddy County, NM with 46. Outside the Permian the next-busiest basins were Haynesville (57), Eagle Ford (49), Williston (35).

How many drilling rigs are there in Canada, and where?

Baker Hughes counted 222 active Canadian rigs in the week to October 9, 2026. Alberta dominates with 158, followed by Saskatchewan with 43 and British Columbia with 14 (14 of them drilling for gas, mainly in the Montney). Canadian drilling is strongly seasonal: activity collapses every spring during "breakup", when thawing ground and road bans keep heavy equipment off lease roads, and peaks in the winter when the ground is frozen.

How many drilling rigs does OPEC have?

Baker Hughes counted 424 rigs across the OPEC members it covers in August 2026. Saudi Arabia alone accounted for 274 of them; the next largest fleets were Algeria (42), Kuwait (37), Libya (28). Iran is a full OPEC member but is not covered by the Baker Hughes survey, so the true OPEC total is higher than this figure.

Does this map show the exact location of each rig?

No. Baker Hughes publishes the county or region each rig is working in, not its coordinates, so every bubble is placed at the centre of its county or region. A county bubble with ten rigs could represent rigs spread across a thousand square miles. Rig-by-rig GPS positions are sold by commercial data providers; this map uses only the free public release and says so rather than scattering invented points.

Why are Iran and Russia missing from the rig counts?

They are not part of the Baker Hughes international rig count, which covers only the countries where it collects data, and Baker Hughes publishes no figures for them. Onshore China is outside the survey as well, which is why China appears only as an offshore count. Other sources do estimate those fleets, but mixing their methods with Baker Hughes' would make the comparison misleading, so this page leaves them as not reported.

How often is the rig map updated?

The US and Canadian counts come from the weekly Baker Hughes report released on Fridays at about 1 p.m. Eastern, and the OPEC and international counts from the monthly Worldwide Rig Count. The map is refreshed after each release; the week and month shown on the page are the reporting periods of the figures you are looking at.
