Brazil Oil: Production, Reserves & Role in the Market
Brazil produces about 3.77 million barrels of crude per day (2025) and holds ~15.9 billion barrels of proven reserves (#15 worldwide). Brazil's output has climbed for two decades on the back of giant deepwater pre-salt fields, run mostly by state-controlled Petrobras — a rare case of a major non-OPEC producer still growing output while OPEC+ manages quotas around it.

Why Brazil's Output Keeps Climbing
The pre-salt story
- Discovered in the mid-2000s beneath a thick layer of salt far offshore, the pre-salt fields (Búzios, Tupi/Lula, and others in the Santos and Campos basins) produce light, low-sulfur crude at relatively low breakeven costs.
- Output is lifted by large floating production, storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs) — Petrobras has been commissioning new units at a steady pace to keep growth going.
- Low breakeven costs have attracted foreign majors as partners even as Petrobras keeps operational control of most pre-salt blocks.
What to watch
- Whether Petrobras executes its heavy 2026–2030 capex plan on schedule, since pre-salt FPSO delays have slipped output guidance before.
- The contested Foz do Amazonas / Equatorial Margin frontier exploration area, an environmentally sensitive new basin Petrobras is pushing to open.
- Brazil's growing weight as a non-OPEC swing supplier — every barrel of Brazilian growth is a barrel OPEC+ has to make room for if it wants to defend prices via cuts.

Brazil Oil FAQ
How much oil does Brazil produce?
Brazil produces about 3.77 million barrels per day of crude oil (including lease condensate, 2025), ranking #9 among the countries tracked here. Source: EIA international statistics.
How much oil does Brazil have in reserves?
Brazil holds roughly 15.9 billion barrels of proven crude reserves (ANP, 2023), the #15 largest in the world. Proven reserves shift with prices and technology — see the caveats on the oil-reserves page.
Is Brazil part of OPEC?
No. Brazil has never been an OPEC member and has stayed outside OPEC+ even as its output has grown enough to draw comparisons to the group's largest producers. That independence is part of why rising Brazilian supply has been a persistent headache for OPEC+ efforts to manage global prices through coordinated cuts.
What is the pre-salt?
The pre-salt is a layer of oil- and gas-bearing rock found beneath a thick layer of salt on the seabed, far offshore in the Santos and Campos basins. It was discovered in the mid-2000s, and its light, low-sulfur crude — combined with relatively low production costs — now accounts for roughly four-fifths of Brazil's proven reserves and nearly all of its production growth.
Does the United States import oil from Brazil?
Yes. The EIA recorded about 229 thousand barrels a day of US crude imports from Brazil in July 2026, 3.7% of the 6,224 thousand b/d the US imported in total, −11.2% on a year earlier.
Does the United States export fuel to Brazil?
Yes. In July 2026 the EIA recorded US exports to Brazil of about 217 thousand b/d of distillate fuel oil, 32 thousand b/d of kerosene-type jet fuel.
Which oil companies operate in Brazil?
