Reserves from this site's hand-curated reserves file, production and consumption from the EIA's latest annual figures (each country reports with its own lag), and the reserves-to-production ratio is reserves divided by a year of production, so it excludes countries without both. Country Comparison FAQ

Why do some countries show "—" for a measure?

Reserves are hand-curated for a limited set of countries from the OPEC Annual Statistical Bulletin, and production/consumption cover the world's top 15 in each category from EIA International Energy Statistics — a country outside those lists shows "—" rather than an invented figure.

What does "years of reserves left" actually mean?

It is the reserves-to-production (R/P) ratio: current proven reserves divided by the current annual production rate. It answers "how long would reserves last at today's production pace," not a real forecast — production rates, prices and technology all change, and new reserves get added over time. See the full caveats on the reserves page.

Where do these numbers come from?

The same data behind our individual country profiles and the world oil statistics page — nothing here is calculated specially for this tool, so figures always match those pages.
