Refinery configuration and geography. Many Gulf Coast and Midwest refineries were built to run heavy crude, which comes mainly from Canada, Venezuela and Mexico, while US shale wells produce mostly light crude that is exported. The US is a net exporter of crude and refined products combined, but it is still a large importer of specific grades.
