Equatorial Guinea Oil: Production, Reserves & Role in the Market

Equatorial Guinea produces about 0.08 million barrels of crude per day (2025). A small Central African nation that became, briefly, one of the highest-output-per-capita oil producers in the world after the offshore Zafiro field came online in the 1990s — output has since fallen by roughly two-thirds from its mid-2000s peak, and it is now OPEC's smallest member by production.

From Boom to Steep Decline

The 1990s–2000s boom

  • The 1996 discovery of the Zafiro field triggered a rapid production ramp-up that, for a time, gave Equatorial Guinea one of the highest oil revenues per capita of any country in the world despite its small population.
  • Output peaked in the mid-2000s as Zafiro and other offshore fields reached full production.

Why it joined OPEC in decline, not growth

  • Equatorial Guinea joined OPEC in 2017, by which point production was already down to roughly half its peak — the government hoped membership would help attract renewed investment and technology transfer from other members.
  • Decline has continued since: by 2022 output had fallen to levels last seen around 2000, roughly a third of the mid-2000s peak, reflecting the natural depletion of aging offshore fields with limited new exploration success.

What is the Zafiro field?

Equatorial Guinea's largest offshore oil field, discovered in 1996. Its output rose rapidly through the late 1990s and early 2000s, reaching roughly 280,000 barrels a day by 2004, before entering a long decline as the field matured.
