Pennsylvania Natural Gas Production: Bcf/d, Month by Month
Pennsylvania produced about 20.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day in July 2026, 16.7% of US output and #2 among the states, −0.7% from a year earlier. It is the second-largest gas-producing state and the heart of the Appalachian Basin, where the Marcellus and Utica shales make the region the biggest source of US gas.

The Marcellus and Appalachia
What sets it apart
- Appalachian wells are drilled for gas, so output responds to the gas price and to pipeline capacity out of the basin, not to crude prices.
- West Virginia and Ohio share the same shale formations; compare all three on natural gas production by state.
- The basin is far from the Gulf Coast export terminals, so pipeline expansion decides how much more gas it can send to market.
What to watch
- Gas storage against its 5-year range, on natural gas storage.
- The Henry Hub price, which sets the return on new Appalachian wells.
- Reserves and rig activity on the rig map.
Pennsylvania Natural Gas Production FAQ
How much natural gas does Pennsylvania produce?
Pennsylvania produced about 20.9 billion cubic feet of marketed natural gas a day in July 2026, 16.7% of US output and #2 among the states, −0.7% from a year earlier. Source: EIA monthly state estimates; the latest month is preliminary.
What is the Marcellus Shale?
A gas-rich shale formation under Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and New York. With the Utica Shale it makes Appalachia the largest gas-producing region in the United States, at about 36.6 Bcf/d in 2025 according to the EIA.
Does Pennsylvania produce oil?
Very little. It is a gas state: see the ranking on oil production by state, where Pennsylvania is a small producer.
