Texas Natural Gas Production: Bcf/d, Month by Month
Texas produced about 37.3 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day in July 2026, 29.8% of US output and #1 among the states, +7.1% from a year earlier. It is the largest gas-producing state, and much of that gas comes up alongside oil in the Permian Basin rather than from wells drilled for gas.

Where Texas Gas Comes From
Associated gas
- In the Permian, gas is a by-product of oil drilling. That means gas output rises and falls with crude prices and rig counts, not with the gas price; see the rig map and Texas oil production.
- When pipeline takeaway capacity is tight, Permian gas can sell at a steep discount or be flared, which is why new pipelines to the Gulf Coast matter.
Why it matters
- Texas gas feeds Gulf Coast LNG export plants and industrial users, tying local supply to global prices; see what is LNG.
- Because Permian gas follows oil, higher crude prices can add gas supply and pull the Henry Hub price down.
Texas Natural Gas Production FAQ
How much natural gas does Texas produce?
Texas produced about 37.3 billion cubic feet of marketed natural gas a day in July 2026, 29.8% of US output and #1 among the states, +7.1% from a year earlier. Source: EIA monthly state estimates; the latest month is preliminary.
Why does Texas produce so much natural gas?
The Permian Basin produces large volumes of gas along with its oil, and the Eagle Ford and Haynesville shales add dedicated gas. The EIA reports the Permian alone supplied about 23% of US marketed gas in 2025.
What is associated gas?
Natural gas produced from oil wells together with crude. Its volume follows oil drilling rather than gas prices, which makes Permian gas less responsive to Henry Hub than gas from dry-gas fields.
