Why Is Diesel So Expensive?
US diesel averages $6.18 a gallon (EIA, week of Oct 12, 2026), $1.85 above gasoline. At the wholesale level ULSD futures are up $2.52 a gallon from a year ago ($2.19 to $4.71): $1.13 of that is crude oil and $1.39 is a wider refining margin, while distillate stocks sit 12% below the five-year average. Below are the five forces behind the price, each with its latest figure.
Where the Year's Increase Came From
| Wholesale diesel (ULSD futures) | Oct 20, 2025 | Oct 19, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brent crude, per gallon (÷ 42) | $1.453 | $2.584 | +$1.132 |
| Refining margin (ULSD − crude) | $0.739 | $2.126 | +$1.386 |
| ULSD futures, $/gal | $2.192 | $4.710 | +$2.518 |
Daily NYMEX settlements on the two dates shown. The two rows add up exactly to the change in the futures price. Retail diesel is the futures price plus distribution, retailer margin and taxes, which change far less than the wholesale price, so the retail increase is roughly the wholesale one. The Five Forces Behind the Diesel Price
| Force | Where it stands now | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Crude oil | Brent $108.54, WTI $97.97 a barrel (Oct 19, 2026 close), +78% on the year. | The feedstock. Every dollar on a barrel adds about 2.4 cents to a gallon. See live prices and the 2026 Hormuz timeline. |
| 2. Refining margin | Diesel crack over Brent $89 a barrel; one-year range $26 to $115, average $61. | What it costs to turn crude into diesel. A wide crack means diesel is scarcer than crude. See crack spreads. |
| 3. Inventories | US distillate stocks 102.6 million barrels (Oct 9), 12% below the five-year average for the week. | The cushion. Thin stocks mean a disruption is met by higher prices, not by drawing down inventory. See weekly EIA data. |
| 4. Tax and distribution | Federal diesel excise 24.4¢ a gallon (gasoline 18.4¢), plus state taxes. The pump price of $6.18 sits well above the wholesale price. | A largely fixed layer that does not fall when crude does. Rates by state are on gas tax by state. |
| 5. Global demand and exports | EU-27 pump diesel $9.08 a gallon vs $6.18 in the US. The US exported about 1,745 thousand b/d of distillate in July 2026. | Diesel is traded globally, so US barrels go where prices are highest. See US exports by country and diesel worldwide. |

Diesel vs Gasoline
Why the two fuels diverge
- At the pump diesel is $1.85 a gallon above gasoline ($6.18 vs $4.33).
- At the wholesale level ULSD futures are $1.59 a gallon above RBOB gasoline futures ($4.710 vs $3.115, Oct 19, 2026).
- Gasoline demand follows commuting and holiday driving; diesel demand follows freight, farming, construction and heating, so the two fuels tighten at different times. Full comparison: diesel vs gasoline.
What to watch
- Mondays: EIA retail diesel (by region).
- Wednesdays: EIA distillate stocks and demand (what the report contains).
- Daily: ULSD futures and the crack on the diesel market dashboard.
- Heating season: distillate competes with heating oil from October (heating oil prices).
Why Diesel Is Expensive: FAQ
Why is diesel more expensive than gasoline?
Diesel averages $6.18 a gallon against $4.33 for regular gasoline (EIA, week of Oct 12, 2026), a gap of $1.85. Diesel carries a higher federal tax (24.4 cents against 18.4), has to meet ultra-low-sulfur specifications, and competes with heating oil, jet fuel and exports for the same middle-distillate barrels. At the wholesale level ULSD futures are $1.59 a gallon above RBOB gasoline futures.
Why have diesel prices gone up so much this year?
Between Oct 20, 2025 and Oct 19, 2026 ULSD futures rose $2.52 a gallon, from $2.192 to $4.710. Crude oil accounts for $1.13 of that (Brent moved from $61.01 to $108.54 a barrel) and a wider refining margin for the other $1.39. When the margin leg is as large as the crude leg, the cause is diesel-specific tightness, not just the oil price.
Will diesel prices come down?
Nobody can say, and this site does not forecast prices. The indicators to watch are all on the dashboard: the diesel crack (a falling crack means the shortage premium is easing), distillate inventories (rebuilding stocks relieve the squeeze) and crude itself. The EIA publishes its own monthly projection on the oil price forecast page.
How does expensive diesel affect other prices?
Diesel fuels most freight trucking, rail, barges, farm machinery and construction equipment, so it is an input cost for almost every physical good. Freight companies typically pass it on through fuel surcharges tied to the EIA weekly diesel average; the fuel surcharge calculator shows how the arithmetic works.
Is diesel more expensive in Europe?
Yes. The EU-27 average is $9.08 a gallon against $6.18 in the US, mostly because of higher fuel tax and VAT. The same wholesale market sets the base price on both sides of the Atlantic.
